Autumn/Fall Wedding Bouquets

March April May

Autumn/Fall blooms of big full many petal led garden grown roses (as opposed to the greenhouse type) ‘David Austin’ style roses are something every rose  lover and gardener dreams of, a wedding bouquet of these often fragrant, almost fanciful, gorgeous blooms are an absolute dream in a wedding bouquet.

Roses are still the number one choice for brides for their wedding bouquets and with every colour except true blue available,  the choices are awesome! In Grandma’s day, if she wanted roses in her wedding bouquets the roses were only available from mid spring to mid Autumn/Fall , with today’s technology  we have an amazing choice all year, if not with locally grown then with imported roses from Holland, Zimbabwe, Chile, Columbia, India, South Africa and many other countries.

Other Autumn/Fall Flowers suitable for your wedding flowers include Calla lilies, the  colour range is creamy white, cream, pink, pink fused with burgundy, burgundy red and the very popular autumn shades of bronze gold, cream,  and  yellow, these long lasting beauties are so suitable for any style of bouquet and team well with roses, berries,  orchids and of course, many interesting foliages.

* Gerberas, always a sunny happy flower and very popular for wedding bouquets,  in mini, standard and large size blooms and the colour range is huge, only excluding blue and true purple, also with bi colours. On their own or in mixed wedding bouquets, I suggest you  might try hot pink mini gerberas with purple lisianthus and orange vanda orchids, or  cream mini gerberas with hot pink roses and purple sweet peas.

*Gloriosa lilies, ( Gloriosa rothschildeana) If you  carry a wedding bouquet full of all gloriosa lilies, you will glow with pure delight. These glorious  lilies originally from Zimbabwe with  recurved petals of brilliant scarlet red and yellow are so exotic they are breathtaking.

* The Oriental, Asiatic and November lilies are also available now, Oriental and November lilies are always more reliable than the asiatic, which is sometimes mistakenly called a  tiger lily, there are new hybrids called L.A  lilies which are more hardy, however it is still necessary to be very careful when handling these, I believe there are other better choices.

For your wedding bouquet. The oriental lilies are now available in yellow and  burgundy as well as the pure white, cream, also in a range of hot pink varieties, there are many new hybrids, the  Stargazer is only one of the  oriental lily varieties,  it has a white background and lovely reddish/pink markings and usually with a dotted throat.

*Gypsophila , better known as ‘Baby’s Breath’  for dreamy wedding flowers with masses of dainty white or palest pink florets create an airy effect, they are not only suitable for wedding bouquets,  also especially beautiful on their  own as a big cloud  in a simple glass vase as a table centrepiece.

* Slipper orchids (Paphiopedilum spp.) bloom in late autumn, mostly in shades of green yellow and brownish red, these orchids are quite unique for modern style or vegetative style wedding bouquets or table centrepieces..

* Carnations are always available and with the new introductions of modern colours such as lime green and deep purple should not be overlooked for choice.

*Banksia, for those with a love of Australian native flowers  there are always some varieties of banksias readily available.

* Leucadendrons , teaming so well with their native cousins the colour range is green, yellow, bright to very dark red, these are almost invincible blooms.

*Gum nuts and Berries in all colours, pepper, Privet, ivy berry.(See article on gum nuts and berries)
