New Siam Tulips
The new Curcuma or Siam Tulips

We seldom see the introduction of a new flower that is
perfect for wedding bouquets and is capable of setting new
trends in design . In the early 1980’s we were introduced to
Baby’s Breath, (Gypsophila
paniculata) this tiny flower was perfect for the style
of wedding bouquets so popular at the time.
In the mid 1980’s along came the
fabulous Lisianthus (Eustoma
Grandiflora) these gorgeous blooms were so readily
accepted into our hearts and minds it is hard to imagine a
world without them. Individually both of these flowers have
made a huge impact on floral design, especially for wedding
bouquets, church and reception arrangements.
We have recent introduction of another exciting
introduction rather loosely referred to as the Siam
Tulip (Curcuma spp). This tropical bulb from
the mountains of Thailand is a member of the Ornamental
Ginger family whose flowers' spikes are recognised for
their rather unique form and striking colours.
Whilst some of the Curcumas may vaguely resemble a
structured Tulip they have many rather
different characteristics. They have the advantage of being
suitable for summer wedding bouquets, church and reception
arrangements as their natural flowering season is late
spring and summer, they behave very well in warm weather and
may last up to three weeks if kept in fresh water in a
vase.
For your wedding bouquet, Siam Tulips
are available from your floral designer during summer in
colours of pure white, pink and mauve, and also some
bicolours of white/pink or white/green.
